The opening ceremony of Cambodian Chemical Society and Conference on “Chemistry and Life”

On the 19-20th of August, 2010, Cambodian Chemical Society (CCS), Chemistry and Food Department, and S&T Institution of Royal Academy of Cambodia, under financial support from UNESCO Jakarta, Indonesia, had arranged the Opening Ceremony of Cambodian Chemical Society and Conference on “Chemistry and Life” at Pre-school Teacher Training Center, Phnom Penh city. Two hundred and seven participants (Female 99 and Male 108, over the expected number 100) attended in this great event. Those were composed of the Teachers of Chemistry at high school in Phnom Penh, Lecturers from Royal University of Phnom Penh (RUPP), S&T Institution of Cambodia, Royal University of Agriculture (RUA), National Institute of Education (NIE), students, members of CCS, representatives from Federation of Asian Chemical Association and Korean Chemical Society, Government officers of Royal Academy of Cambodia (RAC) and related institutions/authorities such as Camcontrol, JICA, UNESCO Cambodia, CEDAC, NGOs, and media.

In this occasion, Dr. Sieng Huy, Chief of Chemistry & Food Department of Royal Academy of Cambodia and Executive Director of CCS, started the welcome speech and described Cambodia Chemical Society‘s establishing process and organizational management structure. Next, H.E. Dr. Neth Barom, vice president of Royal Academy of Cambodia and Chairman of the Board of Director of CCS, gave a speech about the rapid change of Sciences & Technology development in the 20th-21st century in which prosperity and civilization has been brought to human life, especially to economic and social development. In addition, H.E stated the threatening/bad effects of S&T development on human safety, environment, and sustaining development, especially on developing countries due to lacking of safety control and science ethic. H.E also mentioned that the purpose of creating this professional society is to gather specialists to develop chemical technology in Cambodia.

Prof. Dr. Kyung Byung Yoon, representative of Federation of Asian Chemical Society and Korean Chemical Society, expressed his appreciations and joys to see the establishment of CCS today. He also encouraged CCS to try hard in developing Cambodia chemical science and hoped to see CCS become a member of Federation of Asian Chemical Society in the future. He mentioned about the experiences in operating such kind of professional Society and presented the plaque of appreciation and cooperation to the Cambodian Chemical Society.

Director of UNESCO Cambodia, Mr. Teruo Jinnai expressed appreciation and congratulate to CCS’s establishment. He mentioned that UNESCO is always supportive on S&T development such as funding on film showing at ITC and training workshop on food safety program to Journalists as knowledge and expect them to disseminate it to the public. He added that UNESCO also supported a program on protection and development of natural resources at the biodiversity protection of Tonle Sap Great Lake, which was established in 2001. 

Concurrently, H.E Dr. Klot Thyda, President of Royal Academy of Cambodia, expressed appreciation to CCS, she raised some experiences regarding S&T and encouraged all CCS members to try hard in S&T research in order to develop this field as civilized as neighboring countries.
